Projections based on a recent research study by Global Market Insights, Inc., show that the global pretreatment coatings market could reach an annual valuation of over US$15.5 billion by 2026.

Despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on factory operations and the workforce, the automotive and aerospace sectors are expected to perform positively in the coming years, bringing promising growth opportunities for the pretreatment coatings market.

Over the years, pretreatment coatings have become a staple of various end-users. These formulations help achieve metal finishing, corrosion inhibition, scale removal, and many other industrial requirements. Anti-corrosive coatings, pre-paint conversion coatings, metalworking fluids, final seals, and cleaners are among the different types of coatings used for pretreatment.

The rise of powder coatings as a durable, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly solution for automotive, aerospace, construction, and electronics applications will certainly boost the demand for pretreatment coating formulations.

The automotive industry, both in developed countries and emerging ones, has experienced explosive growth over the past decade or so. Changing vehicle ownership trends, thanks to the rise in people’s household income levels, has been a key factor behind the rise in vehicle production worldwide.

Automotive sector to remain a key end-user for pretreatment coatings

Automakers in the U.S. alone sold more than 17 million vehicles during 2019. Although vehicles sales took a dive during a major part of 2020 due to COVID-19 related disruptions, the auto industry is well set for a rebound in the near future.

Growth in vehicle ownership globally, especially in the passenger vehicle segment, could positively impact pretreatment coatings industry dynamics. The automotive sector being a key end-user for these coatings, manufacturers are constantly working on developing formulations suited for automotive applications.

Recently in April 2021, for instance, Chemcoaters, a leading provider of corrosion inhibition coatings, announced that its InterCoat ChemGuard line of anti-corrosion coatings has passed BIW (Body in White) testing. Customers can now utilize these products in the automotive supply chain for BIW applications. Chemcoaters’ range of corrosion inhibiting coatings are designed to extend zinc life and protect galvanized steels from rusting.

Aerospace sector to create substantial demand for pretreatment coatings

The commercial aviation sector took a major hit during 2020 due to a dramatic reduction in air passenger traffic and a weakened aircraft demand. Investments in military aircraft meanwhile kept the aerospace industry on its feet.

However, despite 2020 being a difficult year, the industry is expected to begin to recover in the next few years. Aircraft manufacturers are beginning to receive new aircraft orders, ending a months-long streak during which cancellations outnumbered orders.

American aerospace giant Boeing, for instance, received 40 new aircraft orders in in April 2021. As aircraft makers ramp up production to meet the market demand, the pretreatment coatings market could experience a notable uptrend in the future. Constant developments are being witnessed in the industry as coatings manufacturers look to create specialized products for the aerospace sector.

In July last year, Master Fluids Solutions, one of the leading manufacturers of metalworking fluids worldwide, had introduced HyperSol 888NXT, a new product tailored for the unique and complex needs of the aerospace industry.

Master Fluid’s new line of metalworking fluids is specifically created for machining hard metals such as stainless steel, titanium, and nickel based alloys commonly used in aerospace applications.

Today, the pretreatment coatings market is moving towards more environmentally friendly technologies. Environmental concerns and strict regulations on certain types of coatings could thus limit the product demand to some extent. However, complying with the latest industry standards is a top priority among manufacturers, who are constantly working towards developing more efficient and sustainable formulations.

3M Company, AkzoNobel N.V., BASF, Henkel AG & Co, Hempel A/S, Kansai Paint, Nippon Paint, Barton International, NEI Corporation, and Sherwin Williams Company are among the leading manufacturers of pretreatment coatings in the world.
